Top players, but also clubs from home and abroad, provide (almost) daily insight into the ins and outs of the football world via Instagram, X or other internet channels. In this edition of VZ Social attention to the assistant referee during the round of 16 of the European Championship between Portugal and Slovenia (0-0, 3-0 ns)

Cristiano Ronaldo was saved by his teammate and goalkeeper Diogo Costa on Monday night after missing a penalty in extra time. The Portuguese goalie managed to save no less than three Slovenian penalties. After the match, it was not only the Al-Nassr superstar who kept the emotions going, as one of the linesmen also played a major supporting role during the European Championship match.

The match was led by an Italian trio on Monday. Referee Daniele Orsato was in charge and was assisted by his assistants Giro Carbone and Alessandro Giallatini. One of the Italians had a remarkable habit: the linesman stood several meters inside the lines of the field during the second half and parts of extra time.

On X, the linesman was the talk of the town. Not everyone was happy with the Italian's striking habit. “That linesman really frustrates me. I can't even concentrate on the game,” wrote one observant user. Others found it funny: “The linesman just wants to play along.” UEFA seems to report all moving images, due to copyright.
