Atlético Madrid suffered an expensive loss of points at the last minute on Thursday evening. In the less exciting game with Levante, Diego Simeone’s team got the equalizer in the ninetieth minute of the official playing time: 2-2. Luis Suárez caused a penalty earlier that match; Simeone had to leave the field in the final phase due to protest. Atlético rises to sixth place in LaLiga with 19 points due to the draw, but sees leader Real Sociedad, which earlier that evening already won at Celta de Vigo (0-2), to five points.

Joao Félix immediately informed Levante closing post Aitor Férnandez in the third minute that he was there. With a cannonball of a shot he forced the goalkeeper to stretch, but he managed to turn the attempt around. Nine minutes later, Férnandez had no answer when Antoine Griezmann passed the ball, Felipe headed it towards goal and Griezmann himself gave the final push with the head: 0-1. The home team did not give up and immediately took control of the game. Oscar Duarte appeared dangerously in front of Jan Oblak after almost half an hour of play, but his shot through the middle could not surprise the Slovakian closing post.

It was nota bene Suárez who ushered in the equalizer for the home team. The Uruguayan, who last Sunday los Colchoneros still single-handedly shot next to leader Real Sociedad (2-2), after a lousy defense of Héctor Herrera Ruben Vezo went to the ground: penalty kick. Enis Bardhi went behind the ball and gave Oblak no chance. Suárez, whose game it wasn’t in any case, was relieved of his misery after 58 minutes by Simone: Ángel Correa came in for him. For eighteen minutes there was little to enjoy for the public, until substitute Matheus Cunha decided to breathe new life into the match. The Brazilian got the ball with some fortune from Rodrigo de Paul and pushed in the 1-2.

Simeone, who had already received a yellow card earlier in the match, was overcome by the tension and was referred to the stands with his second. For a long time it seemed that his team would ‘just’ take the three points with them to Madrid, until a handball from Renan Lodi turned the game upside down. The home team got another penalty, which Bardhi scored flawlessly. The eight minutes of extra time were not enough for the visitors to take the victory over the line.
