Atlético Madrid and Hertha BSC have reached an agreement in principle on Matheus Cunha, it knows Sky Deutschland to report. The reigning champion of Spain is willing to pay an amount of thirty million euros – including bonuses – for the 22-year-old striker. Everton signed up for Cunha at the last minute, but the Brazilian has his sights set on a move to LaLiga.

Cunha has recently been linked to a move to Atlético. Fredi Bobic, sporting director at Hertha, confirmed last Saturday that negotiations were underway with los Colchoneros about a transfer from the striker. “The negotiations are tough and the market is very difficult. But our asking price is very clear. Ultimately, I wouldn’t sell it if their bid is below our asking price,” Bobic said in conversation with Sky Deutschland.

Hertha coach Pal Dardai did not include Cunha in his selection for the 1-2 lost home game against VfL Wolfsburg, because he was not satisfied with the Brazilian’s attitude during the game against 1.FC Köln (3-1 defeat). It now seems that Cunha will soon make the way to Spain. Max Bielefeld, journalist of Sky Deutschland, reports that there is an agreement in principle between Hertha and Atlético, which is willing to transfer thirty million euros.

For the time being, nothing has been signed yet, although Cunha seems to be coming out with Atlético himself. Everton reported unsuccessfully for the striker at the last minute, but were told he had his sights set on a move to Spain. Atlético initially aimed at Dusan Vlahovic. Despite that the Corriere dello Sport reported an agreement with Fiorentina worth seventy million euros, that transfer did not get off the ground. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Fiorentina had rejected a bid from Atlético, after which the focus of the Madrilenians was shifted to Cunha.

If Cunha actually makes the switch to Atlético, his employment at Hertha will end after a year and a half. The striker played for Coritiba FC, FC Sion and RB Leipzig, before the Berlin club paid eighteen million euros to sign him until the summer of 2025. In total, 40 appearances for Hertha, Cunha was good for 13 goals and 10 assists. Last summer, he was part of the Brazilian team that won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
