Atlético Madrid is again alone in the lead in LaLiga. The team of trainer Diego Simeone was 2-0 too strong for low flyer Huesca on Thursday evening: 2-0. That means that Atlético has three points more than reigning champion Real Madrid, six points more than number three Sevilla and eight points more than Barcelona. However, Ronald Koeman’s team still has two games to spare.

The opening phase at the Wanda Metropolitano was characterized by a strong start and a fast pace. The first chance was after four minutes for the visitors via Dimitris Siovas, who saw his bet turned by Jan Oblak. A few minutes later, Atlético got a double chance via Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Saúl Ñíguez. Goalkeeper Álvaro Fernández kept Huesca going both times. A new attempt by Ferreira Carrasco and an artful effort by Héctor Herrera did not result in the 1-0 either.

As the first half progressed, the pace decreased and so did the number of dangerous moments in the target areas. Six minutes before the break, Correa nevertheless put the opening goal on the scoreboard. After a pass from Marcos Llorente, he got rid of his guard with a good move and his deflected shot ended up behind Álvaro Fernández. It was already his third goal for the Argentinian in the last two matches and even more important for Atlético: los Colchoneros did not lose one of the 29 league matches (25 wins, 4 draws) in which Correa was accurate.

Simeone’s team started strongly in the second half and was close to a second goal twice via Koke. It was only a snapshot, as Atlético did not want to make an excessive effort and lacked Huesca quality to make it an exciting match. Attempts by Renan Lodi and again Saúl were easy prey for Álvaro Fernández. Ferreira Carrasco took care of the liberating 2-0 ten minutes before time. Siovas fired in the defense, after which the Belgian shot the ball into the roof of the goal from close by on a pass from Llorente.
