The frustration could be read on Luis Suárez’s face at times. Man of the match was Iñaki Williams, who had a large share in both goals, and even got the second behind his name through a panenka. Atletico remain fourth and cannot count themselves rich when it comes to a Champions League ticket, because Real Betis can narrow the deficit to one point.
Athletic Club had lost only one of their last four encounters with Atlético and were also unbeaten in their last three games in their own San Mamés. The hosts opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Iñaki Williams, who played his 226th consecutive LaLiga game without missing a single game, came in the penalty area and shot Mario Hermoso. With a lot of fortune the ball bounced into the goal behind Jan Oblak: 1-0.

The home team smelled blood and organized a continuous rush towards Atlético’s goal. It wasn’t until the half hour that Simeone’s eleven got some control. However, that did not lead to real opportunities; the 1-0 halftime score was certainly deserved. The Madrilenians made an offensive change in the break, but already had to concede the second goal after ten minutes. Iker Muniain was on the ball earlier than Héctor Herrera, who knocked out the attacking midfielder. What followed was a penalty kick, shot in by Williams with a cool panenka: 2-0.
The Athletic attacker quickly came close to his hat-trick, but his effort from the rebound was narrowly reversed by Oblak. Atlético was unable to put pressure on the Basques. By coincidence, Ángel Correa did get a chance by picking a half-high ball from the air, only the Atlético attacker aimed too high. Correa also hit the post in stoppage time with a changed direction from long range.
