Zeljko Petrovic’s debut as Iraq national coach has not gone unnoticed. The new national coach caused amazement on Tuesday in Iraq’s opening match at the Arab Cup (1-1) against Oman. Deep in stoppage time, Iraq was awarded a penalty when they trailed 0-1, which was missed by Ayman Hussein. However, because the Oman keeper had come off his line too early, Iraq was given a second chance. Petrovic came onto the field to prevent Hussein from taking the penalty again.

The new national coach designated Hasan Abdulkareem as the intended penalty taker and that’s how it happened. In retrospect, it turned out to be a good choice, as Abdulkareem scored and gave Iraq a point in the 98th minute of the game. Due to an earlier red card from Yaser Kasim, the team was on the field at that time with ten men. Petrovic has only recently become the national coach of Iraq. He acted as assistant to Dick Advocaat and took over the helm when the latter resigned a week ago.
