Alexander Nübel will play for AS Monaco in the coming second seasons, according to several French and German media. The 24-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper played second fiddle to Manuel Neuer last season, but will be allowed to gain experience on a rental basis for the next two years. Monaco initially wanted André Onana, but did not come to an agreement with Ajax, Fabrizio Romano adds to the reporting.

Bayern still considers Nubel to be the heir to the throne of Neuer, who is now 35 and on a two-year contract. Nübel was signed into Schalke 04 transfer-free last summer and was allowed to keep only four official games on behalf of Bayern last season under Hansi Flick. AS Monaco already has an agreement with the German superpower on a two-year lease deal. Nübel will be medically examined in the mini-state on Friday, after which the agreement can be concluded on Saturday.

At AS Monaco, Nübel has to compete with Benjamin Lecomte, who has been the first goalkeeper of the club from the Ligue 1 for two years. Monaco initially tried to loosen Onana from Ajax. The 25-year-old Cameroonian recently saw his doping suspension shortened to November 4, 2022 NOS that Arsenal have six to nine million euros for Onana. Romano failed to disclose how much Monaco offered for the goalie, only that no deal was reached.

Nübel will be the first summer reinforcement of AS Monaco, which finished third in the league last season and therefore starts in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The Monegasques raised fifteen million euros with the sale of Benjamin Henrichs. The 24-year-old right-wing defender was taken over by RB Leipzig for that amount. Monaco also let Stevan Jovetic, Youssef Aït Bennasser and Loïc Badiashile leave on a free transfer.
