Arjen Robben will receive a suitable end to his football career, FC Groningen announced. The former international, who, after a first retirement, made a comeback at the pride of the north largely fell into the water due to injuries, will be thanked for his services on Sunday 7 November prior to the home game with RKC Waalwijk.

In 2019, Robben hung up his shoes for the first time as a player for Bayern Munich. After a season it started to itch for the former wing attacker and he surprised friend and foe by announcing his comeback at the club, where he made his debut as a sixteen-year-old (also against RKC, the opponent on November 7). Robben worked up a sweat to make it to the kick-off of the 2020/21 Eredivisie season, which he succeeded, but was soon forced to retire due to an injury. The retired attacker continued to struggle with his fitness all season and after a total of seven games he decided to say goodbye to football again, this time definitively.

With the tribute to Robben, FC Groningen hopes to offer ‘one of the greatest Dutch footballers of all time’ a suitable farewell, the club states via the official channels. The 96-time international of the Dutch national team, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, played successively for FC Groningen, PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and thus again for Groningen. Robben, among other things, kicked off the World Cup final in 2010, is the most successful Dutch club footballer ever with twelve national titles and scored the winning goal on behalf of Bayern in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
