The duel at the Olympic Games between Morocco and Argentina took a bizarre turn. Argentina scored the liberating equalizer in the sixteenth minute of the match (2-2), but an hour and a half after the end of the match the equalizer was disallowed. Both teams had to return to the field and this time Morocco did hold on: 2-1.

Cristian Media seemed to crown himself the absolute hero of Argentina, by ensuring the 2-2 final score after a spectacular scrimmage. That also seemed to be the case, because referee Glenn Nyberg allowed the goal. Because supporters came onto the field, Argentine players were pelted with objects and Morocco protested against the equalizer, the match was stopped.

An hour and a half (!) later, VAR disallowed Argentina's equalizer for offside. Both teams had to return to the field to play out the last three minutes and this time Morocco did not concede a goal, winning 1-2 and getting the Olympics off to a great start.

Morocco started the match well and it was dispensation player Achraf Hakimi who allowed Soufiane Rahimi to open the score with a sharp cross: 0-1. Ajax goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli had to fish again five minutes after the break.

Rulli did dive into the right corner, but Rahimi's penalty was simply too accurate: 0-2. Argentina, where besides Rulli also Nicolás Otamendi, Thiago Almada and Julián Álvarez were in the starting line-up, fought their way back into the duel. First, they made the connecting goal via Giuliano Simeone, son of, who tapped in at the far post: 1-2.

After a bizarre scrimmage deep into injury time, including two shots on the crossbar, Media still managed to head the equalizer into the net. That goal was eventually disallowed, meaning Morocco walked away with the victory.
