Brazil started the Olympics on Thursday with a tense victory over Germany. The team of national coach André Jardine was 4-2 too strong after a 3-0 halftime score. Richarlison showed blood form. The Everton attacker accounted for three of the four hits, with the first being indicated by Antony. The Ajax player started in the starting line-up and left fifteen minutes before the end. Matheus Cunha missed a penalty on behalf of Brazil on the stroke of half-time.

In Germany, in the run-up to the opening game at the Olympic Games, it was mainly about a racist incident during a practice game with Honduras. The Under-23 team played a practice match behind closed doors on Saturday, but decided to stop the fight five minutes before the end due to racist remarks against Jordan Torunarigha. The Hertha BSC attacker started against Brazil from the bench. Jardine’s team quickly took the lead. After seven minutes of play, Antony had a great cross-ball at Richarlison. The striker initially shot at Florian Müller’s fists, but was accurate in the rebound: 1-0.

The same Richarlison already had the opportunity to double the score after fifteen minutes of play, but this time he found Müller on his way. Not much later, on a pass from Guilherme Arana, it was hit. After a splitting cross from the left wing defender of Atlético Mineiro, it was a breeze for Richarlison to hit from close range for the 2-0. The attack leader completed his hat-trick after half an hour of play. This time the preparatory work came from Cunha, after which Richarlison found the right corner with a placed shot: 3-0. The striker went down in the history books, as it has never been possible for a Premier League player to score three goals during a match at the Olympic Games.

Brazil could have closed the game after a handball by Benjamin Henrichs, but Cunha failed from the spot. In the second act, the match turned completely over and it was Germany that did something back after just under an hour of play. A shot by Nadiem Amiri was misjudged by goalkeeper Santos and suddenly fell in. When Maximilian Arnold then had to call in with a second yellow card, the resistance of the Germans seemed broken, but a good header from Ragnar Ache brought the tension back for a while. However, the final chord came from the foot of Paulinho, who pulled in from the left and found the right intersection beautifully: 4-2.
