Anthony Martial had little understanding of his substitution during the Premier League game against Bournemouth (0-1 win). Erik ten Hag chose to replace the Manchester United striker with Wout Weghorst in the 57th minute. Martial’s expression showed that he was not happy with his manager’s choice.

The Red Devils needed just eight minutes on Saturday afternoon to take the lead against Bournemouth. Senesi tried to intercept a pass from Christian Eriksen to Casemiro, but mishit him, extending the ball exactly on the Brazilian. Casemiro then shot hard behind Neto with a half bicycle kick: 0-1. United then went to the dressing rooms with a lead. With less than an hour on the clock, Ten Hag decided to bring Weghorst in for Martial.

The Frenchman clearly disagreed with the decision. He trudged off the field somewhat dazed, according to the comments of talkSPORTcommentator Nigel Adderley. “Martial is walking very slowly around the field, and he doesn’t seem too happy with that decision, look at his face! He went straight to the players’ tunnel.” Martial would also have ignored Ten Hag, while he shook hands with some other staff members and teammates. Ten Hag commented on the incident after the game. “I think Martial played well, he eventually returned to the bench. I think he just went into the dressing room for a while,” the manager said talkSPORT.

Martial has often struggled with injuries this season. Nevertheless, Ten Hag has already expressed confidence in his pupil several times. The attacker has an expiring contract, which means that he may close the door at Old Trafford next summer. Since joining United in 2015, Martial has scored 87 goals in 295 official games. This season the counter stands at eight goals.
