Carlo Ancelotti reacted on Wednesday evening to the resignation of Ronald Koeman as coach of Barcelona. While the Italian Real Madrid coach looked back at the scoreless draw against Osasuna at a press conference, the message came through that Koeman had been fired. Ancelotti then expressed his support towards the Dutch coach.

Just after midnight, it was announced that Barcelona had kicked Koeman out. Spanish journalists then asked Ancelotti for a response. “I’ve also been fired several times and I’m still here, alive and happy,” Ancelotti said. “He hears being fired from the coaching profession. You have to give everything you have until the day you get fired. You have to keep looking ahead with a clear conscience. Koeman can do that. He gave everything he could.”

After losing 1-2 to Real Madrid last Saturday, a 1-0 defeat at Rayo Vallecano followed on Wednesday evening. Chairman Joan Laporta then took the plunge and announced Koeman’s departure. It is the fourth time in his career that Koeman has been fired. He was previously kicked out at Valencia (2008), AZ (2009) and Everton (2017), the club where Ancelotti also worked. The Italian has been sacked at two of his last three clubs (Bayern Munich in 2017 and Napoli in 2019).

Ancelotti is firmly in his seat at Real Madrid. After ten league matches the Royal top of the Spanish league. In the Champions League, Ancelotti’s team is in second place with six points, the same as leader Sheriff Tiraspol.
