Ajax will play against Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday evening and the municipality of Amsterdam is also preparing for this. For example, the area around the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the city center and the metro lines that run from the city to the stadium have been designated as a safety risk area by Mayor Femke Halsema. This means that anyone in the areas mentioned can be searched by the police.

Halsema, the chief public prosecutor and the police chief take into account that heavy fireworks are set off prior to the match. “Given the experience of previous Champions League matches, we take public order disturbances into account,” writes the mayor. The security risk area is in effect Tuesday from 12 noon to midnight. Ajax and Napoli themselves kick off that day at 9 p.m.

The municipality of Amsterdam also announces on its website that from this season, stricter action will be taken against face-covering clothing. For example, the municipality warns that having such clothing with you can lead to a stadium ban of six months. A stadium ban of a maximum of eighteen months can be handed out for actually wearing it.

During Ajax’s previous home match in the Champions League against Rangers FC (4-0 victory), the area around the stadium of the team from Amsterdam was also marked as a safety risk area. Then the police arrested more than 20 people. “For various offenses including setting off fireworks and disturbing public order,” the police said. One supporter was also arrested for discriminating against and insulting an employee of the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
