If it is up to Rúben Amorim, Erik ten Hag will be the new manager of Manchester United. The Sporting Portugal trainer is reportedly one of the candidates, like the Ajax trainer, to take over the duties of the dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford. Amorim reacted lightly to the rumors circulating the day before the Champions League meeting with Borussia Dortmund.

“We are talking about rumours. I already said something about that last week, it doesn’t matter much to me,” emphasized the Sporting coach, which has as many points as Borussia Dortmund – six – and therefore has a good chance of overwintering in the Champions League. “I think they should hire Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and very soon, this week, haha. I would really like that.”

The only 36-year-old Amorim put an end to his active career five years ago. He became trainer of Sporting Braga at the end of 2019 and then made the switch to Sporting three months later. The Lisbon club paid no less than ten million euros for the services of Amorim, who went on to win the national cup, the league title and the national Super Cup. He already won the national cup with Sporting Braga.

Ten Hag was also asked at the press conference on Tuesday, the day before the game between Besiktas and Ajax, about the alleged interest of Manchester United. The 51-year-old coach stood by his earlier words. “It is of course always nice if your name is associated with a club of this allure,” said Ten Hag. “But I’m working with Ajax and I don’t need to talk about alleged interests. No one has registered yet. I want to win titles with Ajax and I am fully committed to that.”

Solskjaer’s duties will be taken over for the time being by his assistant Michael Carrick. He was on the bench on Tuesday in the away game with Villarreal (0-2 win) in the Champions League. Manchester United want to appoint an interim coach as soon as possible to complete the season.
