Ajax Under 18 booked a 0-1 victory over Besiktas’ peers in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday afternoon. Amourricho van Axel Dongen took the only goal from eleven meters in a match in which three red cards fell. Ajax Under 18 has collected ten points in Group C after five matches and now has three points more than Borussia Dortmund, which plays away from Sporting Portugal from 4 p.m. and has a better goal difference. Wednesday evening at 6.45 pm Ajax will play the first in the Champions League against Besiktas.

Ajax went into halftime with a deserved lead. Dave Vos’s team had most of the ball in the first ten minutes, but a real chance was not forthcoming. After twelve minutes of play, referee Volen Chinkov pointed to the spot when Van Axel Dongen was knocked out in the penalty area by Burak Selver Yildiz. The attacker then flawlessly cashed in on the eleven-meter staircase: 0-1.

The visit from Amsterdam dominated in the remainder of the first half without playing big and at the same time gave away almost nothing in the back. However, Besiktas’ peers also defended well, so that it remained with Van Axel Dongen’s direct hit. The home side started the second half well, forcing goalkeeper Charlie Setford to make several saves in just a few minutes.

Ajax looked more for the attack as the second half progressed, but attempts by Christian Rasmussen and Gabriel Misehouy in particular lacked precision. Substitute Eskild Munk Dall also failed to close the game. Goalkeeper Emre Bilgin made his first attempt twenty minutes before the end and a minute later Ajax came in front of the goal with four men, but due to a poor pass from Dall, the 0-2 did not come.

In the final phase, the duel could have gone either way. Fifteen minutes before the end, Setford stood in the way of the equalizer with a fantastic save, while Raphaël Sarfo and again Dall failed to make the 0-2. The game was over for Jayden Banel after 87 minutes: he was shown his second yellow card for a wild foul. In the final minutes, Besiktas hit the post and there was also a disturbance between the players of Besiktas and Ajax. Necati Bilgic got red on the side of Besiktas and at Ajax Mateja Milovanovic was also allowed to push in with red. In extra time, a goal by Besiktas was disallowed for offside.
