UEFA performed the draw for the quarter finals in the Europa League on Friday afternoon in Nyon, Switzerland. Ajax is linked to AS Roma while drawing the balls. The matches in the quarter finals will take place on Thursday, April 8th and 15th. Ajax starts the double confrontation with a home match. Rick Karsdorp, the right back of AS Roma, has been suspended for the first game with Ajax. Should Ajax reach the semi-final, the team from Amsterdam will play against the winner of the diptych between Granada and Manchester United.
Ajax was twice too strong for Young Boys in the eighth final: 3-0 and 0-2. In the second round, coach Erik ten Hag’s team managed to deal with Lille OSC twice: 1-2 and 2-1. The Amsterdam club ended up in the Europa League after finishing in third place in the group stage of the Champions League, behind Liverpool and Atalanta. Ajax hopes for a repeat of the scenario from 2017, when the final was reached under then trainer Peter Bosz. In the final battle, however, they were no match for Manchester United (0-2 defeat).
Manchester United was responsible for the elimination of AC Milan (0-1) on Thursday evening. A great performance after the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Arsenal, losing finalist in 2019, was trumped by Olympiacos (0-1). The defeat had no disastrous consequences thanks to the 1-3 victory a week ago the Gunners. AS Roma can also still hope for a place in the final by eliminating Shakhtar Donetsk. The surprise of the evening came to Dinamo Zagreb, which treated Tottenham Hotspur to a significant defeat: 3-0. Mislav Orsic’s hat-trick was enough to brush away the 2-0 defeat of the away game in London.
Slavia Prague shattered the European dream of Rangers FC and manager Steven Gerrard, while Villarreal joined the last eight teams in the Europa League at the expense of Dynamo Kiev. Granada is also working on a very strong season in a European context. The Spanish club lost 2-1 to Molde FK on Thursday evening, but thanks to the 2-0 victory in the first leg, a place in the quarterfinals is a fact.
