Ajax has the Uruguayan striker Nicolás López on the grain as a stand-in for Sébastien Haller, reports the Mexican Marc Claro. The 27-year-old attacker has been playing for Tigres UANL for two years in the Mexican city of San Nicolás de los Garza, almost 9,000 kilometers away from Amsterdam as the crow flies.

López played 24 official games for Tigres last season, 14 of which as a substitute. Despite the many raids, the versatile attacker, who is used as a winger and as a striker, achieved a creditable number of twelve goals and two assists. López is therefore regarded as a valued force at Tigres and, according to Marc Claro only available for a final transfer.

In 2012, the then eighteen-year-old López was brought to Europe by AS Roma. The attacker from Nacional did not live up to expectations and was sold to Udinese a year later. López did not make it there either and in 2016 he returned to South America at the Brazilian Internacional. There he had four successful years, producing 24 goals and 15 assists in 114 official games. Tigres transferred nine million euros to Internacional in December 2019 for López, where he has a total of 12 goals and 3 assists after 32 games. He is on hold until the end of 2023.

After the departure of Lassina Traoré and Brian Brobbey, Ajax is looking for a new stand-in for Haller. Traoré was sold to Shakhtar Donetsk for up to ten million euros, while Brobbey opted for a transfer-free move to RB Leipzig. Dusan Tadic can also play in the striker, but the captain is mainly used by Erik ten Hag as a left winger. In addition, the coach with Danilo, who returned from a rental period at FC Twente, has another center attacker.
