Ajax has finally announced the temporary arrival of Brian Brobbey. The nineteen-year-old striker will come over from RB Leipzig on a rental basis for the rest of the season, the team from Amsterdam reports via the official channels. Brobbey passed the medical examination more than a week ago, which meant that a definitive announcement of his arrival was long awaited. The Telegraph previously assured that there is no option to buy.

Earlier Friday, Brobbey hinted that a confirmation from Ajax was close by. “Back to work now”, wrote Brobbey on Instagram with two holiday photos. He added three crosses to that text, normally a reference to the Andrew’s crosses of Amsterdam. “3 crosses eh”, Ryan Gravenberch responded. To that Brobbey himself replied: “Hahah you understand.” Jurriën Timber and Kenneth Taylor also responded to the post.

Mike Verweij, Ajax watcher on behalf of The Telegraph, wrote in a tweet that Brobbey even trained at De Toekomst (Ajax’s sports complex). Verweij announced in the newspaper earlier that week that the rental deal between Ajax and RB Leipzig had been finalized. Then it was also announced that Ajax had not conquered an option to buy, which the team from Amsterdam was after. Leipzig, however, did not like that for the time being.

Brobbey is considered to be a replacement for Sébastien Haller in Amsterdam, who will be missing for at least two weeks in January because of the Africa Cup. Brobbey went through the entire youth academy of Ajax and so far came to nineteen matches in the first, in which he scored six times. Last summer, the chunky striker moved to Leipzig on a free transfer after failed contract negotiations, where he had to make do almost exclusively with substitutes. Brobbey still has a contract in Germany until mid-2025.
