Ajax is renouncing the possibility to allow supporters to watch the final of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Sunday, April 18, on large screens in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The Amsterdammers unexpectedly received permission from the government to allow 5,000 fans into their own stadium, but find such an event ‘too complex and too short a day to organize now’, a spokesman said. Nu.nl.

The cup final between Ajax and Vitesse will be played in a week and a half in De Kuip, where no supporters are allowed to be present. The government allows Vitesse to allow 3,000 supporters to watch the final in their own GelreDome and also makes use of it. The ‘public viewing’ events around the cup final are part of a large-scale pilot by the government to open up society with the use of access tests.

A week after the final, the 30th round of play in the Eredivisie and the 36th in the Kitchen Champion Division will follow. A limited number of supporters may be present at all those matches. Ajax has announced that it wants to make use of the opportunity to give 7,500 fans access to the home game against AZ on Sunday, April 25. The Amsterdammers are busy organizing this and will later come out with the conditions under which fans are welcome.
