Ajax has reached agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion about the direct transfer of Kjell Scherpen, the team from Amsterdam report via the official channels. A transfer fee is not mentioned by Ajax, but The Telegraph previously spoke of an amount of around five million euros for the 21-year-old goalkeeper.

“We are delighted to welcome Kjell to the club,” said manager Graham Potter on Brighton’s website. “He’s a player we’ve been following for a while and we see him as a player with a lot of the right attributes. In addition to his size, he’s someone who we think will work very hard to improve all aspects of his game as he getting used to English football. We look forward to working with him.”

Scherpen came over from FC Emmen in the summer of 2019 for one and a half million euros and made his debut in the first team on December 16, 2020 in the cup match against FC Utrecht. The closing post played a total of only four official matches in the main squad at Ajax. The international of the Dutch Juniors became national champion with Ajax last season and also won the KNVB cup.

In his first season in Amsterdam, Scherpen defended the goal of Young Ajax. His debut for Ajax in the Eredivisie against sc Heerenveen followed in April of this year and a few days later Scherpen made his debut in the Europa League against AS Roma due to the suspension of André Onana and an injury to Maarten Stekelenburg. In that last game, Scherpen made a mistake by letting a free kick by Lorenzo Pellegrini slip.

Initially, Scherpen would be loaned to PEC Zwolle. The rental transfer was in cans and pitchers, until Brighton reported to Amsterdam at the last minute. Ajax preferred a definitive sale of the goalkeeper and canceled the transfer to Zwolle. At Ajax, Scherpen had become redundant after the arrival of Remko Pasveer and Jay Gorter. The team from Amsterdam also let Daan Reiziger go to Vitesse on a free transfer and Dominik Kotarski was loaned out to HNK Gorica from Croatia.
