AJAX Cape Town were nine points ahead of the National First League (NFD), but will now hope for the final day to count the result in his favor if he wants to play in the Premier League (PSL) next season.

The Urban Warriors are second on the NFD standings after getting stuck 1-2 against JDR Stars in the Rand Stadium yesterday.

That shocking result, coupled with Swallows’ 2-0 win over Richards Bay, means Ajax and the Dube Birds each have 54 points.

So, with one game remaining in the NFD, the Dube Birds are now the new frontrunner thanks to a better goal difference.

The Urban Warriors, who only had a nine-point lead just two games back and looked secure for the title, really shot themselves in the foot.

However, it is successive defeats against TTM and Swallows, coupled with yesterday’s defeat, that make even promotion now uncertain.

For Ajax fans, it is an old story that the team now, for the third consecutive season, has to play an important match on the last day.

Ajax will have to beat Mbombela United on the last day if they want any chance of winning the NFD title and automatic promotion to the PSL.

Mbombela has performed well since local football made its return. He even beat Royal Eagles 2-0 yesterday.

Swallows pack TTM on the last day and will definitely be tested as well.

All the teams are in action on Sunday 13:30 for an exciting end to the NFD season.
