Fred Grim will be definitively for the group at FC Emmen next season, the club from Drenthe announced through the official channels. The 57-year-old coach, who succeeds Dick Lukkien who is leaving for FC Groningen, signs a contract for two seasons at De Oude Meerdijk.

Grim has a past as final responsible at Almere City, RKC Waalwijk and Willem II, among others, where he was fired more than a year and a half ago. The trainer is happy with his move to FC Emmen. “I am very much looking forward to this new challenge. There is a friendly atmosphere at FC Emmen, in which personal contact and the human aspect are important. That suits me well. This club is working hard on the future and I would like to contribute to that.”

Lukkien announced his transfer to FC Groningen three months ago. Since then, Emmen has been looking for a new head coach for next season. The club held talks with various candidates, such as Rob Penders (head coach of FC Eindhoven), Ivar van Dinteren (assistant coach at FC Twente) and Danny Buijs. The latter was still without a club at the time, but was recently presented as the new coach of Fortuna Sittard.

Grim has also been one of the candidates in Emmen for months. The former goalkeeper was invited several times for a conversation in stadium De Oude Meerdijk. Both sides liked it, so nothing stood in the way of employment. In his first season at FC Emmen, Grim immediately has the tough task of enforcing promotion to the Eredivisie. The residents of Drenthe were relegated to the Kitchen Champion Division last week after Almere City turned out to be too strong in the final of the play-offs for promotion/relegation (1-4 over two games).

It has been a year for Grim since he started working as a trainer. Willem II fired the coach in early March 2022 due to the disappointing performance. Before that, Grim had three successful seasons as a trainer of RKC Waalwijk. The Amsterdam native was also head coach of Almere City in the past and worked as an assistant at Sparta Rotterdam and the Dutch national team. In 2017, he even led the the Dutch for a few games as interim national coach after the dismissal of Danny Blind.
