Club Brugge has won the first prize of the season. The team of trainer Philippe Clement was 3-2 too strong for John van den Brom’s KRC Genk in the final of the Belgian Super Cup on Saturday. It was for blue-black the sixteenth Super Cup ever. Bas Dost and Noa Lang appeared at the starting signal; Ruud Vormer was missing from the match selection as a precaution because he had high-risk contact, but he is not infected with the corona virus himself. The Jan Breydel Stadium was filled to a third, good for about ten thousand spectators.

Club Brugge, with sixteen-year-old Noah Mbamba in midfield, dominated the first half, but fell behind immediately after a great Genk attack. Still, Clement’s team came alongside in the first half. After preparatory work by Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye and Bryan Heynen, Théo Bongonda worked the ball behind goalkeeper Senne Lammers, Simon Mignolet’s replacement: 0-1.

In extra time the 1-1 fell: Matej Mitrovic was able to head in after a corner by Mats Rits. In the opening phase of the second half, KRC Genk was completely blown away by the Bruggelings. Ángelo Preciado worked Lang against the ground in the sixteen-meter area and the Dutchman kicked the leather into the top corner with great conviction. Lang celebrated just a little too exuberantly with the fans and received a yellow card on top of it.

Not much later Clinton Mata shot the ball powerfully through goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt and the crossbar against the ropes: 3-1. The ball reached a top speed of 131 kilometers per hour. KRC Genk escaped a fourth goal against: Rits surprised Vandevoordt by suddenly kicking a free kick on goal, but he aimed the ball at the post. Dost made way for Daniel Perez after 77 minutes, while 17-year-old Cisse Sandra made his debut a few minutes before the end as a replacement for Lang.

Jere Uronen took advantage of a misunderstanding in the Bruges defense in extra time and scored. His shot was even harder than Mata’s: 141 kilometers per hour. Cyriel Dessers came in halfway through the field and Carel Eiting made his appearance at Genk in the 59th minute. Club Brugge and KRC Genk are the last three winners of the Super Cup. In 2018 Club Brugge won 2-1 against Standard Luik and in 2019 KRC Genk was too strong for KV Mechelen with 3-0. There was no Super Cup in 2020 due to the corona virus.

While the Eredivisie will not start until mid-August, the first round in the Jupiler Pro League is already scheduled for next week. Club Brugge will start the competition on 25 July with a home match against KAS Eupen and Genk will start against Standard Liège two days earlier.
