AC Milan overnight as the number two in Serie A. Stefano Pioli’s team was 2-0 too strong for coach Filippo Inzaghi’s Benevento on Saturday evening after two consecutive league defeats and moved from fifth to second place in the Italian league. The game was dominated by the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who missed the past games by first being suspended and then injured.
A single goal caused the class difference in the first half. After six minutes of play, Franck Kessie deliberately let a ball from Alexis Saelemaekers run, after which Hakan Calhanoglu worked the ball against the ropes: 1-0. In the second half, Theo Hernández doubled the margin. The left defender scored from a rebound, after a shot from Ibrahimovic was still turned by goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo: 2-0.
The battle for a ticket to participate in next season’s Champions League is unprecedentedly exciting. The difference between number two AC Milan and number five Juventus, which has played one game less, is only three points. An away game against the almost dethroned reigning champion Juventus is scheduled for AC Milan in a week.
