Niklas Moisander continues his career in Sweden. The 35-year-old defender has signed a contract with Malmö FF, the reigning champion of the Allsvenskan reports. Moisander comes transfer-free from Werder Bremen, the club for which he played as a basic player in the last weeks of last season. Moisander has committed himself to Malmö for one season.

Moisander has played for Werder since 2016. He appeared in 142 official games, 23 of them in the past season. He has not missed a minute in the last nine official games of the season. The Finn, who has been wearing the captain’s armband since the 2019/20 season, could not prevent Werder from being relegated from the Bundesliga after 40 years. After the relegation it became clear that his contract was not renewed. Moisander can therefore transfer without any problems to Malmö, which has reserved jersey number 4 for him.

“I am very happy and grateful for this opportunity to play for Sweden’s biggest club,” Moisander said on his new club’s website. “I am very motivated to get started. I look forward to getting to know my teammates and the city. I have always followed the Allsvenskan and I know that Malmö is a big club in Sweden, a bit like Ajax in the Netherlands and Bayern Munich in Germany. It is a great honor to play here. I hope to contribute with my experience and leadership qualities to achieve good results.”

With his transfer, Moisander returns to Scandinavia after eighteen years. He started his career with TPS in Finland and was signed by Ajax in 2003. In his first period in Amsterdam, there was no debut; in 2006 he transferred to PEC Zwolle. After two seasons, Moisander was picked up by AZ, which lost him to Ajax after four years. Three years later, Moisander signed a contract with Sampdoria for an annual salary of approximately two million euros. He left for Werder after a year. Between 2008 and 2017, Moisander played 62 caps for Finland.
