Latest update:

Demba Ba gets involved in the racism scandal surrounding Enzo Fernández via X. The former striker makes mincemeat of Argentina as a country in a short post on social media, in response to the racist song about the French football team that Fernández sang along to after winning the Copa América.

“Argentina, the country of asylum for Nazis on the run,” Ba writes on X. “From 1945 onwards, the country offered shelter to war criminals. And what is happening now surprises you?” Ba quotes an article by The Team from 1995, which describes how Argentina indeed provided shelter to Nazis after World War II.

Former striker Ba played for Chelsea, Fernández's current employer, between 2012 and 2014. The latter has already publicly apologized. Chelsea issued a statement distancing itself from racist remarks, but did not mention Fernández by name. It is unclear whether the club will take disciplinary action against the midfielder.

Racist song after Copa América victory

After the victory against Colombia in the final of the Copa América (1-0 after extra time), the Argentinean selection was ecstatic with joy. Fernández briefly sang along to a song that is known to be racist. It is about the players of the French national team, including star player Kylian Mbappé.

“They play for France, but they’re from Angola,” is a line sung along to by Fernández. Soon after, the song was cut short by teammates or staff members who intervened. The lyrics of the entire song also contain very hurtful and racist lyrics about Mbappé, but in this case, they were not performed on the team bus.

Fernández's action led to much incomprehension among Chelsea teammates. Among others, Wesley Fofana expressed his anger and wrote 'unbridled racism' on Fernández's video. Moreover, according to various media, he immediately unfollowed the Argentine. Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto (both also Chelsea) followed Fofana's example.
