UEFA has launched an investigation into Álvaro Morata and Rodri. The two Spaniards went wild during the celebration of the European Championship title by chanting that Gibraltar is Spanish. It led to anger in Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is located at the southernmost tip of Spain, but has been part of the United Kingdom for over three hundred years. However, the Spanish government has never recognised Gibraltar as part of the United Kingdom.

Morata and Rodri whipped up the crowd in Madrid with the chant 'Gibraltar is Spanish'. A response from the Gibraltar Football Association soon followed. “Extremely provocative and insulting. There is no place for this kind of behaviour in football.”

“The conduct in question is deeply offensive to the people of Gibraltar, who have repeatedly exercised their democratic rights to remain a British Overseas Territory. Despite Gibraltar sharing a border with Spain and valuing its close working relationship with Spain and the Spanish people, it is and remains a British Overseas Territory.”

“The behaviour is also deeply offensive to the Gibraltar FA as it implies that we should not exist as an independent member of UEFA. In this light it is not only insulting but also inflammatory.”

“In a period that should be one of celebration, the players have unnecessarily and deliberately mixed politics with sport. Apparently with the sole aim of insulting the people of Gibraltar.” The Football Association, which also used the terms 'grubby' and 'discriminatory', announced that it would go to UEFA and that has happened.

UEFA is now launching an investigation to determine whether the song violated its “disciplinary rules.” Incidentally, English fans added fuel to the fire before the European Championship final by singing “Gibraltar is ours.”
