Latest update:

FC Utrecht is looking into adding Michael Brouwer to the squad. This was reported by Football International Friday morning. The Heracles goalie comes into the picture when Mattijs Branderhorst, who does not want to play second fiddle for another year, decides to leave the Domstad.

Brouwer is allowed to leave Heracles on a free transfer due to an unusual situation. The 31-year-old goalkeeper has been in Almelo for eleven and a half years and, according to the regulations, should receive a permanent contract if he were to extend his contract again. Heracles does not want that, so Brouwer is now allowed to leave for free. There is a chance that he will seek his fortune in Utrecht.

Branderhorst does not want to warm the bench at Stadion Galgenwaard for another year. He came over from NEC as the first goalkeeper last summer, but was faced with a rude awakening.

Shortly after Branderhorst's arrival, Utrecht signed Vasilis Barkas, who had already been rented the season before. The Greek became first choice and Branderhorst disappeared without mercy to the second plan.

Something that also happened to him in his NEC time with the arrival of Jasper Cillessen. Branderhorst now really wants to gain confidence somewhere under the bar.

If he were to leave, Brouwer is considered a serious candidate to replace him. The question is whether the Apeldoorn player would like a reserve role.

Brouwer has only completed his third season as first choice at Heracles. Two of those seasons were in Almelo, the other on loan at FC Emmen.

Before that, Brouwer had only made fifteen official appearances in nine seasons. Heracles had already secured Fabian de Keijzer as Brouwer's successor last season.
