The English Football Association (FA) is likely to put Ange Postecoglou on the list of possible successors to Gareth Southgate, it reports. The TelegraphThe now former national coach of the Three Lions decided to resign after the lost European Championship final against Spain (2-1). Postecoglou has been closely monitored by the FA for years, who do not see Sarina Wiegman as a successor to Southgate.

Postecoglou made his debut in the Premier League at the start of last season as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The Australian made a good impression, despite the fact that the Spurs finished fifth and will therefore not play in the Champions League next season.

John McDermott, the FA's technical director, has been following Postecoglou's career closely for years and is an admirer of the Australian's work. McDermott will have to look for a successor after Southgate's departure and is currently drawing up a shortlist. However, the FA does not make hasty decisions and it may therefore take some time before a permanent successor to Southgate is presented.

Postecoglou, who is contracted to Tottenham until mid-2027, meets the criteria McDermott wants to see in the new national coach. The FA wants a manager who can manage players well individually and build on the culture that Southgate has introduced to the national team. However, the FA is not blindly focused on one candidate. Moreover, no hasty decisions are being made.

It is therefore quite possible that an interim coach will be in charge of the group when England take on the Czech Republic and Finland in the Nations League in September. England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley, who led that team to the European title, currently seems to be a strong contender for the role of interim national coach, if that actually happens.

Carsley is also a candidate to take over from Southgate permanently, although he is not considered a top candidate. In addition to Carsley and Postecoglou, Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter and Eddie Howe are also highly regarded by the English Football Association. Newcastle United, Howe's current employer, has already indicated that it does not want to cooperate with a departure of Howe, although the club may face a difficult choice if Howe is approached.

Potter and Pochettino, who are currently without a club or country, are said to be interested in the job. Thomas Tuchel is also said to be interested in a contract with the FA. The German, who is also without a club, has, like Potter and Pochettino, a rich history as a manager in the Premier League.

The FA believes there will be strong interest in the job given England’s strong performances in recent years. With two European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final and England’s talented squad of players, the FA believes there will be no shortage of strong candidates.

Wiegman and Klopp

According to The Telegraph Sarina Wiegman is in any case not an option as a successor to Southgate. The Dutchwoman is doing an excellent job with the national women's team of England, where she recently extended her contract until mid-2027.

Jurgen Klopp will also not be the new England manager. According to Sky Sport the former successful Liverpool manager will remain despite interest from the FA in his decision to take a sabbatical. He also previously politely declined the position of national coach of the United States.
