Enzo Fernández has responded to the huge uproar caused by a video on his Instagram. After winning the Copa América, he filmed the Argentina national team celebrating on the bus, but he drew the ire of Chelsea teammates and the French FA, among others.

After the victory over Colombia in the final of the Copa América (1-0, after extra time), the Argentinean selection was ecstatic with joy. In the bus after the match there was a lot of singing, but after a while Fernández made a mistake in the eyes of many.

The Argentina midfielder suddenly sang along to a song made up by Argentina supporters at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It is not entirely clear in the video whether he also started the song himself.

“They play for France, but they come from Angola,” was one of the lyrics sung at the time by many Argentinians, who also hurled hurtful slogans at Kylian Mbappé.

On the bus, Fernández sang along to that exact song, but was advised by one of his teammates or a member of staff to stop filming immediately. That advice came too late, because many had already heard which song the Argentine was referring to.

Fernández's action led to much incomprehension among Chelsea teammates. Among others, Wesley Fofana expressed his anger and wrote 'unbridled racism' on Fernández's video. Moreover, according to various media, he immediately unfollowed the Argentine. Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto (both also Chelsea) followed Fofana's example.

At the same time, the French Football Federation has filed a complaint against the Argentinians. “Given the seriousness of the texts, which go against the values of sport and human rights, we have decided to file a legal complaint regarding racism and discrimination,” the federation wrote through official channels.

Fernández's response

Fernández feels compelled to issue a statement on Instagram and is deeply sorry. “I would like to sincerely apologize for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the celebration of the Copa América win with the national team,” the Chelsea midfielder begins.

“The song contains very offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I am against any form of discrimination and I apologize for having been carried away by the euphoria after winning the Copa América. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry,” Fernández concluded.

Fernández apologizes.
