René van der Gijp has a hard time with Ronald Koeman's substitution policy during the European Championship quarter-final between the Dutch national team and Turkey (2-1). The Dutch national coach chose to leave Memphis Depay and Xavi Simons on the bench for a long time and to keep Donyell Malen on the bench, to Van der Gijp's surprise.

The duel with Turkey was difficult for Koeman's team. In the first half, the Netherlands started strongly, but as time went on, they lost their grip on Turkey.

It resulted in a counter goal and a 0-1 deficit at half-time. During the tea break, criticism was already heard about the front four players of the Netherlands – Memphis, Cody Gakpo, Steven Bergwijn and Simons – and substitutions would have been justified according to Van der Gijp.

However, only Bergwijn was sacrificed, much to the dissatisfaction of Jibewho would like to see Simons taken off earlier. “I would have just substituted him in the first half,” the former pro is tough on Today Inside the Dutch.

“He played very unluckily. He lost almost all the balls,” reasons Van der Gijp, who would have liked to see Malen on the pitch. The Borussia Dortmund striker remained on the bench for ninety minutes on Saturday evening.

“Malen doesn't really do well with Koeman for some reason,” says Johan Derksen. “He hardly uses it.”
