Mayor Ahmed Marcouch of Arnhem issues a stern warning to football fans on Saturday. The mayor of the Gelderland city wants to prevent public order from being disrupted after the European Championship match between the Netherlands and Turkey and threatens with a sky-high fine.

It is a tradition among Turkish football fans to go out en masse into the streets after victories of the national team and celebrate. Car horns are often honked, the Turkish flag is waved from the window and fireworks are not shunned in the city centres.

Marcouch seems to be done with the massive popular festivities in the city center of Arnhem after the previous four times that Turkey played at the European Championship. “The law enforcement officers and police are so kind to put their family and friends life aside tonight for safety and will take action if public order is disturbed,” Marcouch writes on Instagram.

There will be extra attention for three things, Marcouch warns. “The enforcement officers will take action against the disruption of public order and will note down the license plates of those who a) recklessly violate traffic rules, b) honk excessively in a disruptive manner and c) setting off fireworks is prohibited and punishable and will also be enforced.”

The fine is 280 euros. “I expect it to be okay, because traffic controllers, street coaches and youth workers are also vigilantly present on the streets and people who are warned count for two.”

Marcouch has nothing against parties, the mayor of Arnhem emphasizes. “I have honored all requests for outdoor TV screens. Whoever wins tonight, there will be a party.”
