Ajax is saying goodbye to Jorge Sánchez, the Amsterdammers officially announced on Thursday. The Mexican defender had a contract with Ajax until mid-2026, but is leaving the Johan Cruijff ArenA two years earlier. Sánchez is continuing with Cruz Azul from his homeland.

Mike Verweij from The Telegraph reported in early June that Ajax will retain three million euros from the definitive sale of Sánchez, who was loaned to FC Porto last season. Ajax itself has not made any statements about the definitive transfer fee.

The 26-year-old Sánchez was acquired from Club América in 2022 for five million euros, which seems to make Ajax suffer a loss. His debut followed on 28 August of that year, in the 0-2 away win against FC Utrecht. Sanchez played a total of 26 times for Ajax, who waved him goodbye with three goals to his name.

According to the Mexican branch of the Cruz Azul, last winter ESPN also interested in the Ajax defender on loan to Porto. In Portugal, Sánchez had to make do with substitutions last season.

In the season that Sánchez played for Ajax, he, like the rest of the selection, received a lot of criticism. This, according to him, 'hurt a lot'.

“I started to believe everything people said, but thanks to my mental coach and my wife, I became mentally stronger,” he told Mexican media last October.
