Latest update:

Christian Chivu has turned down a position as assistant at Ajax because he would rather work as head coach. The former defender confirmed this in an interview with Football International. Chivu did feel 'flattered' by the offer, he says. “But I would rather take the next step as head coach.”

At the end of April, there was still no clarity about the staffing of Ajax this season, and Graham Potter was still considered the top candidate for the head coach position. Chivu was seriously considered to assist the Englishman.

Potter, however, turned down the position, and Chivu also sold the Amsterdammers 'no' shortly afterwards. The latter did not do so because he did not want to work at Ajax.

The former captain of the Amsterdammers is aiming for a position as head coach, he also told Alex Kroes. “I spoke to Kroes about it and felt flattered that Ajax approached me. I have thought about it carefully, but I would rather take the next step in my coaching career as head coach. I will calmly wait and see what comes my way,” Chivu told VI.

Chivu, who wore the red and white of Amsterdam between 1999 and 2003, gained experience as a youth coach at Inter over the past seven years. He recently announced his departure from the Italian top club.

Does he aspire to be head coach at Ajax? “That would be great, but time will tell. I will continue to follow Ajax and wish the new coach much success. I hope that people can be proud of Ajax again.”

Ajax eventually appointed Francesco Farioli as head coach in May, taking assistants Daniele Cavalletto and Felipe Sanchez Mateos with him to the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Dave Vos, the third assistant, was transferred from Jong Ajax. Jelle ten Rouwelaar was added to the staff at a later stage as goalkeeper coach. Performance coaches Alessandro Schoenmaker and Callum Walsh complete the Amsterdam ensemble.
