Ajax would prefer to say goodbye to Josip Sutalo this summer, according to journalists Lentin Goodijk and Tim van Duijn on behalf of Football InternationalThe Amsterdammers are betting on the arrival of 29-year-old Daniele Rugani (Juventus), which can be seen as a sign of distrust in Sutalo, who is contracted until mid-2028.
According to VI the interest in Rugani does not come out of the blue. “The fact that Ajax is betting on Rugani indicates that the club sees little future in Josip Sutalo.” Last summer, the Amsterdammers paid 21 million euros to take over the 24-year-old Croat from Dinamo Zagreb.
The journalists know that Ajax is working hard in the background to sell Sutalo, hoping to strengthen itself in several positions with the proceeds. “The club can forget about the fact that Ajax will make a profit on Sutalo. And it is even questionable whether Ajax will succeed in getting the purchase price back.”
Ajax hoped for a good EC from Sutalo, but got a rude awakening. The right-footer himself is calmly waiting. “Although there is interest in Sutalo, he seems to have other plans and does not want to leave Amsterdam yet, because he is aiming for revenge under Farioli.”
Someone who does not have to leave Ajax is his compatriot Jakov Medic. “The Croat makes a great impression under Farioli and does not have to leave at all costs, even though he is not eligible for a starting place.” However, there is a big chance that Medic himself wants to leave the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Sutalo has so far played 2,726 minutes for Ajax, spread over 32 official appearances. In those, he managed to score once. If Sutalo leaves this summer, he could go down in history as one of the biggest bad buys ever at Ajax.
Medic was a lot cheaper and was acquired from FC St. Pauli for just 2 million euros. The 25-year-old Croatian has only played 517 minutes for Ajax so far, spread over nine official appearances. He did manage to score a phenomenal goal against Heracles Almelo (4-1 win) at the start of last season.
