Latest update:

Cody Gakpo was the celebrated man in the first half of the Dutch team. The Liverpool player put the 0-1 on the scoreboard after twenty minutes and is therefore in the running for the top scorer title of the European Championship.

Who else but Gakpo, some Dutch fans must have thought after the striker's opening goal. After excellent preparatory work by Jerdy Schouten, Gakpo sought out his man, easily passed him, and struck a devastating shot into the near corner: 0-1.

It is far from Gakpo's first goal for the Dutch national team at a final tournament. After his opening goal against Poland (2-1 win) and equalizing 1-1 against Austria (3-2 loss), the attacker scored his third European Championship goal against Romania.

With that he is joint top scorer in this final tournament. Georges Mikautadze, Ivan Schranz and Jamal Musiala also scored three goals so far. Two of them (Mikautadze and Schranz) have already been eliminated.

Reijnders and Schouten

Tijjani Reijnders and Jerdy Schouten were also able to produce excellent figures in the first half. The duo recorded a passing percentage of one hundred percent in the first half, as analyst Pierre van Hooijdonk let slip during the break.

Gakpo was also productive for the Dutch national team in the previous final round. During the 2022 World Cup, the former PSV player also scored three times, then in all group stage matches: against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar.

Of his twelve goals for the Dutch national team, Gakpo scored six (exactly 50 percent) at a final tournament. Of all Dutch national team players with more than 7 international goals, Gakpo is the player with the highest percentage of international goals at a European Championship, after Johnny Rep.
