The Dutch national team will try to reach the quarter finals of a European Championship for the first time since 2008. In an attempt to put Romania aside in the round of 16, national coach Ronald Koeman chooses to keep Joey Veerman and Lutsharel Geertruida on the sidelines. They will be replaced by Denzel Dumfries and Xavi Simons. The match in the Allianz Arena in Munich starts at 18:00 and can be seen on NPO 1.

Bart Verbruggen defends the goal of Oranje and sees four defenders in front of him with Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij, Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Aké. The latter has been struggling with 'physical complaints' in recent days, but they have not been serious enough to keep him on the sidelines.

In midfield, Veerman is sacrificed after his mediocre performance against Austria (2-3 loss). Simons, who replaced the PSV player before half-time, is in the starting line-up this time and can show his worth in the 10 position. Behind him, Tijjani Reijnders and Jerdy Schouten complete the midfield.

Up front, Koeman chooses Donyell Malen as right winger. Memphis Depay is in the striker position, while Cody Gakpo, who is the top scorer for the Dutch team at the European Championship with two goals, is positioned on the left side of the forward line.

Koeman hopes that the off day against Austria came at the right time. “The players and staff have been very open with each other. Then you go to training and you see a reaction from the players. That gives me the feeling that the disappointment has been processed in all respects. Only yes, you have to see the confirmation on Tuesday.”

“I have the feeling that everything has arrived,” Koeman later told the NOS. “That's a feeling, but it has to happen on the field. When a good result comes, the world looks different again. Confidence has suffered a bit of a dent. To claim more, it has to be better.”

If the Netherlands manages to beat Romania, it will play the quarterfinals against Austria or Turkey on Saturday evening. Those two countries will face each other later that evening, at 21:00, in the last eighth finals of the tournament.
