Nijmegen native Maarten Paes has been called up for the match between the MLS All Stars and Liga MX All Stars, Major League Soccer announced via its official channels. The 26-year-old FC Dallas goalkeeper is therefore part of a fairly prestigious group.
The MLS All Stars, a mix of the best footballers from the American league, will face the Liga MX All Stars, a mix of the best footballers from the Mexican league, on July 25. Paes is one of the three goalkeepers who can report for the duel in Columbus.
The Dutch youth international, who wants to play his international matches for Indonesia, has quite a bit of competition in the goalkeeping guild. Roman Bürki (St. Louis City) and Hugo Lloris (LAFC) are the other goalkeepers in the MLS selection.
Of the defenders called up, Jordi Alba (Inter Miami) is the most famous name. Messi's bosom friend, who played with the Argentine for years at FC Barcelona, will not be participating in the European Championship this summer. Former PSV target Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati) may also show his face.
Also among the midfielder are two of Messi's Barcelona friends. Riqui Puig (LA Galaxy) and Sergio Busquets (Inter Miami) will be in Columbus. As will Hector Herrera (Houston Dynamo FC) and former wonderkid Ryan Gauld (Vancouver Whitecaps FC).
Up front, Messi can combine with his teammate Luis Suárez (Inter Miami), Federico Bernardeschi (Toronto FC) and Christian Benteke (DC United). For now, his focus is on the Copa América. The final of that tournament will be played on July 15. Ten days later, Messi will face the LIGA MX All Stars.
