René van der Gijp has his doubts about Memphis Depay's way of doing things. Table companion Wim Kieft once saw the attacker up close and has a slightly different image of the Dutch international, although he does understand that Memphis's behavior sometimes evokes resistance.

“I have the feeling that I am looking at someone that I have my doubts about. In this respect,” said René van der Gijp in the episode of KJEG of this week, pointing to his head. “But you told me he's a pretty smart guy.”

“Of course I see all those images and documentaries,” Kieft chimes in. “I trained that boy once, but that was ten, twelve years ago. I was a striker coach (at PSV, ed.), I actually taught him how to do it,” says the former striker with a wink.

“But when he was with those guys, Henk Fraser was the trainer at the time, it was really not that bad. He didn't do any extremely crazy things. But look, those guys suddenly start earning a lot of money and he (Memphis, ed.) is quite extravagant,” the analyst refers to the attacker's clothing style, among other things.

“They all do things that I think: That could be a little less. But I don't think he's in the wrong place or anything. Within such a group,” Kieft somewhat protects Memphis.

“But I once asked you if he is completely up to date?”, Van der Gijp wants to know in conclusion. “Up to date in terms of intelligence? Yes, I do think he is intelligent. Look, he doesn't come across as nice as your favorite, Denzel Dumfries”, Kieft counters.

“Yes, I think he's a very nice and open boy. I like watching him,” reveals Jibe. “And I also like to watch Aké, Brobbey, Gakpo. But there are also a few that I look at and then have my doubts. Memphis is one of them, and Noa Lang is one of them. Is everything going completely okay up here?”
