Latest update:

Daley Blind should start as a midfielder in the Dutch national team, says Valentijn Driessen in the football podcast Kick-off by The Telegraph. According to the morning newspaper's football chief, the veteran is a good option who will not collapse under the pressure.

Driessen saw Veerman fall through the ice twice during the group stage of the European Championship. The lost match against Austria (2-3) was a low point. The journalist then indicated that he had a very gloomy outlook for the Volendammer. “Normally, Koeman will be there until mid-2026, then we will have the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.”

“Joey Veerman will not be there. The the Dutch shirt is far too heavy for Veerman, even after a great season at PSV,” Driessen grumbled. A day later, the journalist thinks about a solution for national coach Ronald Koeman.

“We have a very light, young and inexperienced midfield,” said Driessen. When presenter Pim Sedee mentions Blind's name, his often critical colleague reacts optimistically. “Veerman has succumbed to the pressure, but someone who will not succumb to the pressure is Daley Blind.” The 34-year-old Blind has already played 107 international matches.

Driessen likes it: the 'ball steady' Blind in midfield. “He always looks for the solution and knows how to find the space very well. In that respect you can say that Blind would be a good replacement.”

The journalist wonders whether Blind is included in Koeman's plans at all. “It is very typical that we have played three group matches and I think there are eight players who have not played any minutes yet. So he doesn't really like to change things up, even when things aren't going well.”

Driessen hopes that Koeman will dare to do it. “I would really like to see him in midfield, but somehow coaches are not entirely keen on putting him in that position. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't post him there.”
