Frenkie de Jong will not go to the European Championships, the KNVB announced on Monday evening. The midfielder tried to train, but his ankle injury still bothers him too much to play in Germany.

Since De Jong's entrance into the Dutch training camp, it was clear that his participation in EURO 2024 would be a race against time.

Although it was initially hoped that he would be ready to play during the group stage of the European Championship, a planned examination yesterday and today showed that the ankle is not yet sufficiently resilient.

Because his recovery will take more time, it was decided in consultation that De Jong will not play the European Championship.

National coach Ronald Koeman will decide at a later stage whether he wants to add a replacement for De Jong to the Dutch team's European Championship selection.

It is a big blemish on a beautiful evening for the Netherlands, which was too strong 4-0 in the final match against Iceland.

Another point of concern is the retirement of Teun Koopmeiners. Although the midfielder completed the warm-up, he appeared to have too much trouble with his groin to be able to take action against Iceland. He was replaced by Jerdy Schouten.
