Willem van Hanegem would 'find it very nice' if Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum could also form a duo at club level, he said in the Willem & Wessel podcast from the Algemeen Dagblad. The Feyenoord club icon considers it unrealistic for the two to move to De Kuip, but still sees possibilities.

Memphis was told this week by Atlético Madrid that he can leave on a free transfer this summer. His automatic contract extension will not be continued and so the ninety-time Dutch international can be picked up for free this summer. The Curve provides Memphis with advice about its future.

“Memphis has everything he wants, he just has to make sure he goes to a club that wants him,” Van Hanegem begins. “He has to play again, so he has to have a good time. He has to choose the pleasure and not the money, he will get that anyway. He still has quite a bit of money lying around.”

Memphis is then mentioned as a possible reinforcement for Feyenoord, but Van Hanegem does not see that happening. “We already have two strikers. It is also not certain that Santiago Gimenez will leave.”

“The way Memphis has been playing in the last six months, he is not a reinforcement for us,” he assesses.
“When you start thinking, you also think: 'It's not possible'. That he suddenly plays so well in that last match.”

When it comes to a possible reunion of Memphis with 91-time Dutch international Wijnaldum, Van Hanegem sees opportunities again. “That would be very nice, yes. At Memphis you have to play the way that suits him best. That is also the case with the Dutch national team.”

Yet Van Hanegem does not think that it is a realistic option for Feyenoord, although he would find it very nice if the two could form a duo again like with the Dutch national team. “Of course we often see unrealistic things in football. Still, it would be absolutely beautiful,” he concludes.
