NAC Breda is close to the arrival of Carl Hoefkens, it is reported Football International. An appointment of the 45-year-old head coach would be quite a stunt, as the Belgian was active in the Jupiler Pro League and was ultimately responsible for major clubs such as Club Brugge and Standard Liège. The deal could be completed quickly, as Hoefkens is without a club.
Although it is not yet known whether NAC will play in the Eredivisie or Kitchen Champion Division next season, Hoefkens is said to have already given his consent. According to VI his arrival is independent of a possible promotion.
Hoefkens has been without a club since December last year and would like to get back to work. KV Mechelen, among others, hoped for his signature, but according to the Dutch football magazine, NAC trumps several Belgian clubs.
Hoefkens sees a lot of potential in NAC and the other way around Pearl of the South to acquire an ideal successor to Jean-Paul van Gastel with the Belgian. “After discussions with various candidates, it appears that the decision has ultimately been made to join forces with Hoefkens, although the club does not want to confirm this because of the play-offs,” journalist Joost Blaauwhof wrote late on Thursday evening.
According to Blaauwhof, Andries Ulderink (assistant coach of Mark van Bommel at Royal Antwerp) and Jonas De Roeck (clubless) were also high on the list in Breda. However, De Roeck will succeed Van Bommel in Antwerp.
Hoefkens, who played 22 international matches for Belgium as a right back, started his coaching career in the youth academy of Club Brugge. Between 2019 and 2022 he was assistant coach with Blauw-Zwart's first team. In July 2022, Hoefkens was given the opportunity as head coach of Club Brugge, but after 27 official matches he was dismissed from the Belgian top club. In Liège, Hoefkens lasted 22 official matches as head coach.
