Mario Been has his doubts whether Nuri Sahin is the right trainer for Feyenoord at the moment. The former midfielder is on one of the lists to succeed Arne Slot, who is leaving this summer. If it were up to Been, Feyenoord would do well to bring Marino Pusic back.

“Sahin has been a great football player, but has very little experience as a trainer,” Been begins skeptically Football talk on ESPN. “Whether he is the right man to replace Slot… I think it is better to hire an experienced coach to build on the success.”

Been would rather see Pusic join Feyenoord. “He became champion in Ukraine with Shakhtar. I don't know if he wants it, but that seems a much more logical option to me. He fits well in the group, knows Slot's way of working and can build on that.”

“Sahin is undoubtedly a talented coach, I certainly believe that, but I do not see it in my mind to put someone without experience in front of a group that has recently become champions and will play in the Champions League next season.”

Leo Driessen, also a guest, states that it does not have to be a bad thing to take a different approach with a young trainer and a different football vision. “But do you think it is a logical choice, if you have performed great with a coach for three years, to then take a very inexperienced coach?” Been maintains his position.

Availability

Kees Kwakman states that Feyenoord is dependent on the trainers who are available. “I think they would like to continue Slot's line, with a trainer who approaches it in the same way, but you just have to wait and see who wants to.”

Finally, the name of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who played together with Sahin at Feyenoord in the past. “Can Gio be an assistant?” Jan Joost van Gangelen wonders out loud. “Gio will not become an assistant,” says Been. “I can't imagine that. Gio is a head coach and has proven that. That's not going to happen.”
