The Saudi Football Association has launched an investigation into Cristiano Ronaldo, the Arabic newspaper reports Asharq al-Awsat. The 39-year-old superstar of Al-Nassr was let go on Sunday during the away match against Al-Shabab (2-3). After the home team's fans had sung Lionel Messi several times, Ronaldo made an obscene gesture towards part of the crowd.

Images circulating on social media show Ronaldo making a masturbatory gesture to Al-Shabab fans. He also provoked the home fans by holding his hand behind his ear. Al-Shabab fans chanted the name of Messi, Ronaldo's major competitor, several times during the competition match.

Ronaldo's action, who scored the opening goal against Al-Shabab, is not appreciated by everyone. Renowned journalist Waleed Al-Farraj responded to the incident through X. “The disciplinary committee faces a major test. We'll have to wait and see. Everything has its limits, no matter how famous you are. That's how it works in big leagues.”

Ronaldo was recently under fire when he pulled a rival's scarf across his crotch after a defeat against Al-Hilal (2-0). Messi was also serenaded during that match, causing Ronaldo to shoot a ball into the stands out of frustration. He received a yellow card from the referee for that action.

The Portuguese has not yet responded to Sunday's incident. Via Instagram, Ronaldo only shared a photo of his goal celebration after his goal. “Till the end. We keep going and won't stop!” Al-Nassr are currently second in the Saudi Pro League, four points behind Al-Hilal, who have a game in hand.

Goal scoring machine

Ronaldo is having a fantastic season at Al-Nassr. The Portuguese superstar scored 28 goals and 11 assists in 29 official matches. Next summer, the 205-time international (128 goals) will go to his sixth European Championship with his native country. In 2016, Ronaldo won the prestigious tournament with Portugal, beating France 1-0 in the final.

In January 2023, Al-Nassr took advantage of the transfer-free status of Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his contract terminated with Manchester United. In Riyadh the goal machine will be fixed until mid-2025. The total count on behalf of the Saudi top club now stands at 48 official matches. Ronaldo scored 42 goals and 13 assists.
