PSV will again have Joey Veerman at its disposal against FC Volendam on Sunday. Without the midfielder, Peter Bosz's team drew with FC Utrecht and Ajax and lost in the cup against Feyenoord.

“His status has increased week by week in recent weeks,” says Milan van Dongen Football talk on Veerman's absence. “I have the feeling that Veerman has taken away a lot of criticism this season with his play. Have all the problems been resolved now that he is going to play?”

“I think it is a lot more difficult for an opponent if he participates,” Karim El Ahmadi agrees. “You see that they often put a man on Schouten in midfield. Mauro Júnior is of a different caliber than Veerman. With Veerman there you have two guys who want the ball.”

Koeman about Veerman

Ronald Koeman joined last Sunday Good morning Eredivisie focuses on the development that Veerman is going through. In the eyes of the national coach, the PSV midfielder must improve even more defensively.

“It is clear that he has made progress,” says Koeman. “The discussion with Joey is never about what he does with the ball. Everything Joey does with the ball is always good. There is always an idea behind it. He has a good technique and a good kick, but it is mainly about highest level: is that also an added value for your team? You have doubts about that.”

Koeman also said that there are not enough top matches in the Netherlands in which players like Veerman can be tested. “He will watch matches like Dortmund in the Champions League,” said Kees Kwakman, also a guest in the football talk program.

“He started working on his weaknesses and developed them,” says Kwakman. “In recent weeks you have seen his value on the ball, although it must be said that those were difficult matches with Utrecht-away, Feyenoord-away and Ajax-away. Then it might be noticed more quickly.”

Next step

Kwakman believes that Veerman is ready for a next step. “It doesn't happen often to him that he has been injured. He has become physically stronger. You have the feeling that Spanish football suits him best. That is also not happening at the highest pace.”
