Latest update:

After his dismissal, Marc Overmars has been asked twice about returning to Ajax. This is evident from a study by NOS. The first time was four weeks after he was fired from Amsterdam for inappropriate behavior, the second time followed shortly after the dismissal of Sven Mislintat. In both cases, Overmars declined to reunite.

In February 2022, Ajax announced that the then technical director will leave Ajax with immediate effect. The reason for that 'bomb' is cross-border day of the former international.

“I drove myself crazy,” Overmars tells the newspaper NOS“Of course, I was there and made my own mistakes, but it stays in your head all the time. Then you keep thinking: how is this possible?”

Leen Meijaard, chairman of the Supervisory Board at the time, 'condemned' Overmars' behavior 'in the strictest possible terms', but did keep in touch with the dismissed technical director, the reconstruction NOS.

“Hi Marc, can we meet on March 4? Then we will not talk about money, but how you can make things right with the women. That is really necessary, otherwise it will continue to fester,” writes Meijaard, who immediately names of Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as temporary replacements.

Not everyone was in favor of Overmars leaving, as outlined NOS. Edwin van der Sar and Danny Blind wanted to keep Overmars on board. “I was the one who said: 'We have to try to keep Marc in whatever way we can,'” Blind is quoted as saying.

In March, Overmars was asked for a return for the first time by Meijaard. “I burst into tears,” Overmars remembers. “Because I thought: what am I going through?! I had to resign. And then he suddenly says: 'We can't live without you, hide away for a few months, take therapy and we'll bring you back.'”

“I said to him: 'Why are you doing this to me? Those first weeks were hell.'” Meijaard denies to the broadcaster that he proposed a comeback, but that Overmars himself suggested returning.
