Russia is banned from participating in UEFA international competitions as long as it is at war with Ukraine. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin confirmed this in conversation with Metropolitan. The country has been banned from international football tournaments since the start of the war, about a year and a half ago.

For example, Russian clubs are not allowed to participate in the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Women’s Champions League and Youth League. Russia is also excluded from the European Championship and World Cup and this will not change for the time being, Ceferin confirms. Russian clubs and national teams will only be welcome again once the war with Ukraine is over.

Ceferin mentioned it during the interview Metropolitan also about ending cooperation with sponsor Gazprom, which comes from Russia. “We just had to do that,” said the UEFA president. “We couldn’t show an advertisement for that company after the start of the war while hundreds of millions of people were watching the match.”
