Edson Álvarez escaped a (red) card on Saturday evening during the top match against AZ (0-0). The Ajax player was provoked in the final phase by Sam Beukema, who acted somewhat giggly after a failed header from the Mexican. Álvarez played with fire, but was eventually only addressed firmly by referee Danny Makkelie.
“This is bloody irritating,” says Marciano Vink The Tribune after seeing the remarkable action of Álvarez. “But a rule has been set: it’s about intensity. Antony also had a number of moments at Ajax last season when he kicked or was very annoying.” The center defender annex defensive midfielder has already received ten yellow cards this season. Never before has an Ajax player picked up so many cards in an Eredivisie season.

Presenter Jan Joost van Gangelen wonders why Álvarez did not get a yellow card for his remarkable action towards Beukema. “Just shoot me, I really don’t remember what the rule is now”, says Vink, somewhat surprised, after which Perez joins in jokingly. “Isn’t he at his maximum number of yellow cards for this season? This is stupid behavior, but I don’t think this is a red card,” said the Danish analyst.
