There is probably no special Champions League clause in Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Al-Nassr. Mark wrote on Monday that the star striker’s commitment stipulates that he can return to the multi-billion dollar ball on behalf of Newcastle United, provided the Magpies finishing in the top four in the Premier League. However, the Spanish sports side now claims to have spread false information. What causes confusion is that the original message is still online.

According to the initial reporting of Mark the special provision in Ronaldo’s contract is linked to Newcastle United, the club that is not entirely by coincidence in Saudi Arabian hands. Should the current number three in the Premier League finish in the top four places and thus win a Champions League ticket, Ronaldo has the option to enforce a rental period at Newcastle. That doesn’t seem an unfeasible scenario, looking at how the cards are now shuffled for Eddie Howe and co.

The ‘news’ of Mark was shared en masse in football country. However, the magazine wanted to rectify its own reporting barely a few hours later and therefore turned to various large Twitter accounts. “There is no information about Newcastle in Cristiano’s contract,” agreed Mark in a series of tweets. The original message saying the opposite is only still online on the website.

So it remains to be seen whether Ronaldo will be in the Champions League next season. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner left top European football on the last day of 2022 with a heavy heart. The Portuguese dreams of a sixth title in the Champions League and also has a prestigious record to defend: with 140 goals, he is the all-time top scorer in the billion dollar ball. His eternal rival Lionel Messi recently tied his future to Paris Saint-Germain until at least mid-2025 and is only eleven goals behind Ronaldo: a serious threat.
